Synopsis

ONE FINE MESS

Welcome to Trenton, New Jersey, home to wiseguys, average Joes, and Stephanie Plum, who sports a big attitude and even bigger money problems (since losing her job as a lingerie buyer for a department store). Stephanie needs cash—fast—but times are tough, and soon she’s forced to turn to the last resort of the truly desperate: family...

ONE FALSE MOVE

Stephanie lands a gig at her sleazy cousin Vinnie’s bail bonding company. She’s got no experience. But that doesn’t matter. Neither does the fact that the bail jumper in question is local vice cop Joe Morelli. From the time he first looked up her dress to the time he first got into her pants, to the time Steph hit him with her father’s Buick, M-o-r-e-l-l-i has spelled t-r-o-u-b-l-e. And now the hot guy is in hot water—wanted for murder...

ONE FOR THE MONEY

Abject poverty is a great motivator for learning new skills, but being trained in the school of hard knocks by people like psycho prizefighter Benito Ramirez isn’t. Still, if Stephanie can nab Morelli in a week, she’ll make a cool ten grand. All she has to do is become an expert bounty hunter overnight—and keep herself from getting killed before she gets her man...

My Review

This is the first Evanovich book I've read and it won't be the last! This book had been sitting on my shelves for quite a while, and I really wanted to read something from my acquired-before-2014-TBR list, so I grabbed this one.

One For the Money is a fast-paced mystery with a touch of comedy. Stephanie Plum isn't your average bounty hunter, and she only picks up the job because she's recently out of work and low on money. As she becomes more involved in finding the suspects, she realizes this isn't as easy as she though. On top of that, she's pissed off a very prominent professional boxer, and he's out for her life. I've never read a book that's both a mystery and a comedy, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But it turns out Evanovich does a really great job balancing all aspects. The comedic parts don't take away from the mystery, which I really appreciated. I can't wait to keep reading this series and learning more about Stephanie Plum and Joe Morelli!

Excerpt

“Hey. Sorry about losing you.”

“You didn’t lose me. I left.”

That she did. “Can I come in?”

She hesitated a moment. “Uh, sure.” She stepped aside and he entered the large room with an ocean view. The sliding French door was open, and the gravitational pull of the beach led him to the patio.

“Nice view,” he said over his shoulder.

“It really is. This is the nicest place I’ve ever stayed at. Not that I’ve stayed in very many places.” She came up beside him, and her cinnamon sugar scent teased him.

He wanted to taste her. Eat her up.  “Is this your first time seeing the ocean, too?”

“Yes,” she whispered like she was embarrassed about it. “And I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that before our lesson the other day.”

“No apology necessary. I’m pretty impressed you did what you did.”

“Really?” Delight wiped out her shame, coaxing big-ass smiles out of them both.

“You’re a lot tougher than you look.” He turned his head toward the ocean, afraid that if he looked only at her, he’d do something stupid. Bikini-clad women dotted the beach, but not one sparked his interest like the woman next to him. Especially now that pink colored her cheeks. He wanted to take her full bottom lip between his teeth, kiss her, slip his tongue inside her mouth, and once he’d had his fill, lick his way down her body until—

“What about you?” She curled up on one of the cushioned patio chairs.

“What about me?” He took the other seat, stretching his legs out and situating himself for an easy view of the beach through the iron slats of the patio railing.

“How would people describe you?”

Her question drew his undivided attention. “Depends on who you ask.” He smirked. “Women and men have very different opinions of me.” The sun glittered off her auburn hair, casting a radiant halo. “All good, mind you.”

She rolled her eyes. “Do you ever get tired of it?”

“It?”

“The fame. Being recognized everywhere you go. Having to always wear a certain image.”

His heart beat a little faster. The image he shared with the world was far from the guy his family and close friends knew. He got the feeling from Sophie’s warm, interested eyes that she really wanted to know what made him tick. In his world, women only wanted to know how to get in his board shorts, so it took him a minute to process her curiosity.

And damn if it didn’t bother him that she apparently didn’t want in his pants.

Synopsis

The perfect life

A successful lawyer and loving mother, Nina Bloom would do anything to protect the life she's built in New York--including lying to everyone, even her daughter, about her past. But when an innocent man is framed for murder, she knows that she can't let him pay for the real killer's crimes.

The perfect lie

Nina's secret life began 18 years ago. She had looks to die for, a handsome police-officer husband, and a carefree life in Key West. When she learned she was pregnant with their first child, her happiness was almost overwhelming. But Nina's world is shattered when she unearths a terrible secret that causes her to run for her life and change her identity.

The perfect way to die

Now, years later, Nina risks everything she's earned to return to Florida and confront the murderous evil she fled. In a story of wrenching suspense, James Patterson gives us his most head-spinning, action-filled story yet--a Hitchcock-like blend of unquenchable drama and pleasure.

My Review

Every time I pick up a James Patterson book, I know I'm going to love it. There's something about the way he writes and his stories that just suck me in. I know not everyone feels like way and that's ok. I love his work and will (try to) read everything he writes - though I haven't gotten into his young adult or children's work yet.

This was a fast-paced thriller; Nina is living a lie that no one knows about and she has to protect herself and her child. But at the same time, she can't let an innocent man be executed because of something she knows he didn't do. Trying to get others to see that he didn't do it isn't easy, though, and she finds herself in a race for her life. This story had so much suspense and so many "whodunnit" moments. I was taken on twists and turns trying to figure out what was going to happen and was quite often surprised! I can't say enough good things about Patterson and his work, so if you pick this one up, or one of his many others, you won't be disappointed!

Synopsis

Time Was

Stranded in the present, time traveler Caleb Hornblower's biggest problem wasn't returning to the twenty-third century - it was falling in love with the beguiling Liberty Stone, who showed him a love more powerful than time itself. Though he belonged in the future, how could he leave the past - and Liberty - behind?

Times Change

Cynical Jacob Hornblower had followed his brother Caleb into the past, hoping to lure him back home. But his mission was soon forgotten when he found himself captivated by Liberty's spitfire sister, Sunny. Can a man who is down on love understand the truly timeless power of the human heart?

My Review

Well, I'm a little late posting this review since I finished it about a week ago (and I usually like to post reviews right away). This book has been on my TBR pile for quite some time... well before 2014 rolled around, so I'm glad I finally got to it! I really enjoy time travel novels, though I haven't read many of them yet, and this one didn't disappoint. Time and Again has two novels in it: Time Was and Times Change. Time Was is about Caleb and Libby, how they met, how he ended up in her time. And Times Change is about how Jacob tracks Caleb down in the past to convince him to come home. Both books were good reads. I enjoyed all of the characters and I though Roberts did a good job bringing out the quirks of each Caleb and Jacob when they discover 'old' things from Libby and Sunny's time. I do wish that we learned a little bit more about Caleb and Jacob's world, though. We got a few little glimpses into it, but I wanted to see more! Overall, this was a good, easy read.

My Review

I received an advanced reader copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Every time I'm asked to read one of Robin Bielman's novels, I jump at the chance! I love her work and can't get enough! Keeping Mr. Right Now was the perfect romantic read. There's love and heartbreak, sexy characters and steamy romance. What more could you ask for?!

Sophie and Zane make a great couple and compliment each other well. Sophie is reserved, a little shy and not too sure about herself. Zane, on the other hand, appears incredibly confident and sure about what he wants. But as the two spend more time together, they each develop and grow into better people. Sophie becomes more confident and Zane becomes more sure about himself in areas that he secretly doubts himself.

It's a great romance and fun story. I couldn't get enough of it! Usually I read at night and then jump into bed and fall asleep shortly after. But last night, I stayed on the couch and didn't move until I finished this book! It had me laughing at some points and near tears at others. I know my fiance thinks I'm crazy when I start crying over a book, but I love knowing a book can reach my emotions so much! Highly, highly recommend this book! Can't wait to read more of her work!

*Book Blast* The Graham Saga by Anna Belfrage

The Graham Saga
by Anna Belfrage

Join Anna Belfrage as her beloved time-slip series, The Graham Saga, is featured around the blogosphere from July 28-August 15 with HF Virtual Book Tours and enter to win your own set of Books 1-6!

About the Saga

This is the story of Alex and Matthew, two people who should never have met - not when she was born three hundred years after him.

It all began the day Alex Lind got caught in a thunderstorm. Not your ordinary storm, no this was the mother of all storms, causing a most unusual rift in the fabric of time. Alex was dragged three centuries backwards in time, landing more or less at the feet of a very surprised Matthew Graham.

In a series of books we follow the life and adventures of the expanding Graham family, both in Scotland and in the New World - and let me tell you it is quite an exciting life, at times excessively so in Alex' opinion.

Sometimes people ask me why Alex had to be born in the twentieth century, why not make her a woman born and bred in the seventeenth century where the story is set? The answer to that is I have no idea. Alex Lind is an insistent, vibrant character that sprung into my head one morning and simply wouldn't let go.

Seductively she whispered about terrible thunderstorms, about a gorgeous man with magic, hazel eyes, about loss and sorrow, about love - always this love, for her man and her children, for the people she lives with. With a throaty chuckle she shared insights into a life very far removed from mine, now and then stopping to shake her head and tell me that it probably hadn't been easy for Matthew, to have such an outspoken, strange and independent woman at his side.

At this point Matthew groaned into life. Nay, he sighed, this woman of his was at times far too obstinate, with no notion of how a wife should be, meek and dutiful. But, he added with a laugh, he wouldn't want her any different, for all that she was half heathen and a right hand-full. No, he said, stretching to his full length, if truth be told not a day went by without him offering fervent thanks for his marvelous wife, a gift from God no less, how else to explain the propitious circumstances that had her landing at his feet that long gone August day?

Still, dear reader, it isn't always easy. At times Alex thinks he's an overbearing bastard, at others he's sorely tempted to belt her. But the moment their fingertips graze against each other, the moment their eyes meet, the electrical current that always buzzes between them peaks and surges, it rushes through their veins, it makes their breathing hitch and ... She is his woman, he is her man. That's how it is, that's how it always will be.

About the Author

Anna Belfrage
Anna was raised abroad, on a pungent mix of Latin American culture, English history and Swedish traditions. As a result she's multilingual and most of her reading is historical- both non-fiction and fiction. Possessed of a lively imagination, she has drawers full of potential stories, all of them set in the past. She was always going to be a writer - or a historian, preferably both. Ideally, Anna aspired to becoming a pioneer time traveller, but science has as yet not advanced to the point of making that possible. Instead she ended up with a degree in Business and Finance, with very little time to spare for her most favourite pursuit. Still, one does as one must, and in between juggling a challenging career Anna raised her four children on a potent combination of invented stories, historical debates and masses of good food and homemade cakes. They seem to thrive…

For years she combined a challenging career with four children and the odd snatched moment of writing. Nowadays Anna spends most of her spare time at her writing desk. The children are half grown, the house is at times eerily silent and she slips away into her imaginary world, with her imaginary characters. Every now and then the one and only man in her life pops his head in to ensure she's still there.

[Review] Leaving Home: Short Pieces by Jodi Picoult

Leaving Home: Short Pieces by Jodi Picoult
Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Publishing Date: Oct 1, 2011
Format: audio, library
2 CDs
Links: Goodreads | Amazon | B&N

Synopsis

Leaving Home brings together three, previously published short pieces, each dealing with a variation on the theme of leaving home. The first, “Weights and Measures,” deals with the tragic loss of a child; the second is a non-fiction letter Picoult wrote to her eldest son as he left for college; and, “Ritz” tells the story of a mother who takes the vacation all mothers need sometime.

My Review

I found this Audio CD at the local library and couldn't pass it up! I'm a huge Jodi Picoult fan and have read almost everything she's written (I just bought Lone Wolf, so after that, it will be everything :)). The first short piece in this set was a letter she wrote to her son when he left for college. I really liked this letter; it was so real. I don't know whether her son appreciated it as much when he first got it, but I think as time goes on, he'll treasure that letter. The great thing about it being published is that he'll always have a copy of it.

The second story was Weight and Measures, which deals with the loss of a child. The couple in this story is struggling so much to continue on with day-to-day living. Both parents are dealing with the loss in different ways, and don't completely understand or relate to how the other parent is coping. I wish this story had been longer because I felt like it was just cut off. I also wish I knew more about what happened to the daughter, because it was a little vague. But overall, I still liked it.

The third story, Ritz, was probably my favorite of these three. Its about a mom who takes a vacation from her family. When she does this, her family has to learn to cope without their rock that's holding the family together and keeps everything moving. I didn't like how she went about taking this vacation, but I think she got her point across to her family. She needed to remember who she was as a person, other than a mom and a wife.

[Review] How Do I Love Thee by Lurlene McDaniel

How Do I Love Thee by Lurlene McDaniel
Publisher: Laurel Leaf
Publishing Date: Dec. 24, 2002
Format: paperback, purchased
272 Pages
Links: Goodreads

Synopsis

Though written more than a century ago, Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s beautiful sonnet rings true today for three young couples who believe in the power of love.

In “Night Vision,” Brett finds a way to brighten a special girl’s lonely existence. “Bobby’s Girl” features Dana, who must choose between two brothers, both of whom she loves. “Laura’s Heart,” the third story, introduces 16-year-old Laura Carson, who is hospitalized on a regular basis because of her weak heart. But when tragedy strikes a loved one, she realizes her heart is stronger than she thought and that love lives on forever.

My Review

This was a reread for me; I had read so many Lurlene McDaniel's books when I was younger, and when I saw this for only $1.00 at my local book store, I couldn't pass it up! I loved all of her work and couldn't read it fast enough! There's something about her stories that just draws you in and won't let go.

This novel is comprised of three short stories: Night Vision, Bobby's Girl and Laura's Heart. Each is unique, but all the the theme of finding love and terminal illnesses. Night Vision is a short and sweet story. The characters fell in "love" too fast, but overall, it was a great short work. I wish it was longer so I could learn more about the characters!

Unlike when I started Night Vision, I didn't remember Bobby's girl at all from when I was younger. As the story went on, pieces came back to me, but overall, the story was still 'new' to me. The MC in this novel faces a difficult decision when she has to choose between brothers. I couldn't decide who I was rooting for: Steve or Bobby, but either way, the story was still good.

The final short story, Laura's Heart, also wasn't familiar to me but it was pretty good. I'm thinking Night Vision was one that stuck out because it involves a disease that I had never heard of before. Regardless, it was very enjoyable to reread these stories. Took me down memory lane to my childhood a bit (: I have another McDaniel book on my shelf now (also $1.00!), and since they're fairly quick reads, I'll be starting that soon!

Top Ten Tuesday 8.5.14

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the The Broke and the Bookish. Every week she posts an idea for a 'Top Ten' list relating to books, and encourages other book bloggers to respond and participate. All the details are listed on her site.

This week's question: Top ten books (and authors) I'd recommend to those who haven't read mysteries.

I absolutely love mysteries and I feel like they often get left out in the book blogging world where young adult tends to take over. I read pretty much any genre, so you'll see a wide variety on my blog, but within the last few years, I've really gotten into mysteries!

Still Missing by Chevy Stevens
This is the first book I've read by this author and I really enjoyed it!

James Patterson
Ok, I'd recommend pretty any one of his books because I love them all! I've mostly been reading his standalone novels and the Women's Murder Club series, but I am going to slowly make my way to the Alex Cross series (: The Postcard Killers and Women's Murder Club are probably among my favorites of his.

Blue Smoke and the Nightshade Series by Nora Roberts
These books are romantic suspense, so it's definitely what drew me to them first. I used to only read romance novels, but after these, I started reading more suspense/mystery.

Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight
I LOVED this book. It's about a girl who dies and her mom tries to figure out what happened to her. Highly recommend!

Lisa Gardner
My first book of hers was The Neighbor and I've been hooked ever since! Her Detective DD Warren series is the one I'm currently working on, but I've found a few of her other novels and series that I can't wait to start!

In The Woods by Tana French
First novel of hers that I read, but it won't be the last! She knows how to suck you in with these mysteries!

Missing You and Six Years by Harlan Coben
I've only discovered Coben within the last year or so, but I can't get enough of his work!

Chill Factor by Sandra Brown
If you like a little romance, then pick up this mystery/suspense! It's a great way to ease into mysteries if you're not too sure. This is one of my absolute favorite novels of hers!

Iris Johansen
She's good. I haven't read her work recently, but I have one or two on my TBR pile to get to!

[Review] The Goodbye Summer by Patricia Gaffney

The Goodbye Summer by Patricia Gaffney
Publisher: Avon by Harper Collins
Publishing Date: May 2004
Format: paperback
460 Pages
Links: Goodreads | Amazon | B&N

Synopsis

From New York Times bestselling author patricia gaffney comes an unforgettable novel about daring to love, braving a loss, and setting yourself free.

For thirty-two-year-old Caddie Winger, one summer makes the whole world look different. Jolted from her comfy, self-made nest and forced to see the world with new eyes, Caddie begins to take charge of her future—finding a new best friend, taking risks she never dreamed she could, and navigating the depths and shallows of true love and crushing heartbreak. And in the course of one extraordinary season, Caddie Winger will learn how to trust other people...and, ultimately, how to trust herself.

My Review

This book has been sitting on my shelf for a while; I think I got it from my mom years ago, and never really looked at it until now. I figured it was finally time to get it off my shelf. I haven't read anything by Patricia Gaffney before, and this sounded interesting, so I gave it a try!

This was an interesting read. It didn't suck me in and I don't think it was an amazing book, but I liked it. It kept me interested in reading and I wanted to figure out what happened to the characters. Caddie lives with her grandmother until her grandmother goes to Wake House because she injured her leg. Caddie is living alone for the first time in a while and doesn't quite know how to adjust. As the book goes on, we see Caddie grow and become slightly more confident in herself. She forms new relationships with other residents of Wake House, like Thea, Magill, and Cornel. She struggles with finding her independence, but ultimately, this summer transforms her life completely.

Overall, it was a good book, but not great. There wasn't really anything wrong with it, but it didn't have the 'wow' factor I was hoping for throughout the story.

Stacking the Shelves 8.1.14

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga @ Tynga's Reviews. Its all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, whether physical or virtual books. This means you can include books you buy in physical stores or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course, ebooks! Tynga posts this meme on Saturdays, but you can post on any day that works best for you! Check out the guidelines by visiting Tynga's blog!

I haven't gone to the bookstore in a while to buy anything, but I did go to the library last night and picked up some audio books! Lately I've really enjoyed listening to books, mostly when I'm driving, but sometimes when I'm doing things around the house (which only happens when my fiance isn't home because he wouldn't listen to them with me). So after returning Fangirl (see my review here!) I picked up 4 more and I can't wait to start them (:

I love everything she writes, so I can't wait to hear these short pieces!

I read this book years ago and absolutely loved it. So I picked up the audio version (though I own the paperback copy) to reread and I can't wait (:

I've read most of her work and love it all. This looks like a great new (to me) series to start!

I've heard/seen so many great things about this book! When I saw the audio was available at the library, I couldn't pass it up!
